User Guide
Everything you need to know about using DeskReset — from first launch to daily resets.
The short version: DeskReset finds the gaps in your calendar and suggests short movement breaks — called resets — that fit around your actual day. You accept, swap, or skip each suggestion. No streaks, no guilt, no minimums. A 5-minute reset counts.
Getting started
First launch
When you open DeskReset for the first time, you'll move through a short sequence before reaching the main app:
- 1An intro carousel introduces the app's approach — short, supportive, no pressure.
- 2A 7-question setup quiz builds your profile. Every answer shapes which resets you see.
- 3A calendar setup wizard lets you choose which calendars DeskReset reads and where it writes reset events. Optional — you can skip it and connect later.
- 4An office hours screen asks for your typical work window (e.g. 8 am–6 pm). This scopes suggestions to your actual workday.
After setup, you land on the Home tab. The whole first-launch sequence takes about two minutes.
Setup quiz
The quiz has 7 questions. Your answers are used to match resets to your actual level and needs — not an imagined average.
Activity level
Mostly sedentary · Lightly active · Regularly active. Sets the intensity baseline for all suggestions.
Where you feel desk work the most
Lower back · Tight hips · Neck and shoulders · Posture / forward slump · Energy and focus. Pick any that apply — resets targeting these areas get priority in your suggestions.
Wall pushup baseline
Can you do a wall pushup with good form? Yes or not yet. Used to set your starting strength level.
Floor pushup baseline
Can you do a floor pushup? Sets a higher strength threshold for workout matching.
Plank hold estimate
Under 15 seconds · 15–30 s · 30–60 s · Over a minute. Used alongside the pushup baselines to calibrate intensity.
Available equipment
Pull-up bar · Dip bars or parallettes · Resistance bands · Yoga mat · Sturdy chair · Wall space · Foam roller · Suspension trainer. DeskReset only suggests resets you can actually do with what you have. You can update this any time.
Daily time budget
5 min · 10 min · 20 min · 30 min or more. There is no minimum — 5 minutes is a real reset.
Calendar setup
DeskReset uses your calendar in two ways — reading free time, and writing reset events. You control both separately.
Connecting calendars
The setup wizard shows all calendars synced to your Android device, grouped by account. Tap checkboxes to select which ones DeskReset reads to find your free windows.
Read vs. write calendars
- Read calendars — DeskReset checks these for busy time when building your daily suggestions. It only sees whether a slot is busy or free, never event titles or details.
- Write calendar — when you accept a reset, DeskReset can add a block to this calendar so the time shows as busy to others. You choose which calendar gets these events, or opt out entirely.
If you select only one writable calendar, it becomes the write target automatically. If you select more than one, the wizard asks which to use. You can change both selections at any time from Settings → Calendar preferences → Re-run setup.
Office hours
Office hours define your Mon–Fri working window. DeskReset uses this window to scope suggestions — it won't propose a reset before your day starts or after it ends.
The default is 8:00 am – 6:00 pm. Change it in Settings → Office hours. The start and end times clamp automatically to prevent a zero-length window.
Daily use
DeskReset has four tabs at the bottom of the screen.
Home tab
Your daily overview. The Home tab shows:
- This week strip — a 7-day Mon–Sun bar. Each day shows dots for your scheduled resets (filled = completed, outlined = not yet done). Today is highlighted. Weekend days are muted.
- Today peek card — a summary of today's planned resets and how many are done. Tapping it navigates to the Today tab.
- Quick-link tiles — shortcuts to Calendar preferences, Your work summary, and other key areas.
Today tab
The Today tab is where you manage your resets for the day. It shows a timeline of proposed and accepted reset slots, ordered by time.
At the top, a day tab strip lets you navigate to any weekday in the current week — Monday through Sunday. Today is highlighted with your current day's accent color.
Reading the timeline
- Each entry shows the proposed time window, the reset name, and its duration.
- Accepted resets show a progress indicator based on completed steps.
- A progress bar at the top of the screen tracks how many of today's resets are done.
Actions on each entry
- Accept — confirms the reset slot. Adds a calendar event if a write calendar is set.
- Start / Resume — opens the workout player for a workout-type reset. For exercise-type resets, marks it done directly.
- Swap — opens the swap sheet to replace the suggestion.
- Remove — removes the slot from today's list.
- Add — adds a new suggestion to a free slot (shown as open gaps in the timeline).
Week tab
A full-week view of the current calendar week (Mon–Sun). Each day is a card on a timeline spine in that day's accent color.
- Each day card lists your accepted resets for that day, sorted by start time.
- Completed items show a checkmark at full opacity. Scheduled-but-incomplete items are dimmed.
- Workout resets use a filled dot; exercise resets use an outlined dot, both in the day's accent color.
- Weekend rows are visually muted. Today's row has an accent border.
Stat pills at the top of the screen show your total resets done and active days for the week.
Log tab
A reverse-chronological history of all completed sessions, grouped by week. Each entry shows the workout name, date, time started, and how many steps were completed.
Groups are labelled "This week", "Week of [date]", and so on. Empty weeks don't appear. Partial sessions — where you completed some steps but not all — are logged too.
Resets
A reset is any scheduled movement break — either a structured workout (multiple exercises in sequence) or a single quick exercise. DeskReset suggests both depending on how much time is available in your day.
Accepting and removing
Proposed resets appear on the Today tab. Tap Accept to confirm a slot — this locks it in and, if a write calendar is connected, adds a calendar event.
Tap Remove to discard a slot. You can add a new one from the open-gap rows in the timeline.
Swapping
Tap Swap on any proposed or accepted reset to open the swap sheet. Two options appear:
- Different [workout / exercise] — keeps the same type but picks a different one from the library. Previously seen suggestions for this slot are excluded to avoid repetition.
- Quick exercise instead / Fit a workout instead — switches the content type. The sheet shows a preview of the alternative name before you commit.
Swapping is non-destructive — you can swap again if you don't like the new suggestion.
Workout player
Tapping Start on a workout-type reset opens the workout player. It walks you through each exercise step by step.
- Timed steps auto-start and count down. A beep plays in the final 3 seconds (only on timers that started above 4 seconds, so short rest periods stay silent).
- Rep-based steps wait for you to tap Done — there's no forced timer.
- Rest periods between exercises count down automatically.
- Tap the exercise name during a step to open the exercise detail screen without losing your place. The timer pauses while the detail screen is open.
- Tap the back button or use the exit prompt to leave mid-workout. Your progress is saved — resuming later picks up where you left off.
The player syncs step completion back to the Today tab in real time, so the progress bar on Today stays current.
Past and future days
You can navigate to any weekday in the current week using the day tab strip at the top of the Today tab.
- Past days — Add, Swap, and Remove are hidden. A Mark done button appears on each reset so you can log activity you completed without using the app. Tapping again shows Done ✓ (disabled). Empty past days show "No resets logged for this day."
- Future days — Add and Swap are available. Mark done is not shown. You can plan ahead by accepting suggestions for upcoming days.
- Today — full controls available as normal.
Browse
Workouts and exercises
The Browse screen (accessible from the Home tab quick links) has two tabs — Workouts and Exercises.
Workouts tab
Workouts are grouped into two sections:
- Ready for you — workouts that match your current profile and available equipment. No modifications needed. You can start any of these directly.
- Needs equipment — workouts you could unlock by adding a piece of gear. Tapping one shows exactly what's needed, with a shortcut to update your equipment in profile settings.
Exercises tab
Individual exercises from the full library, partitioned the same way — available and locked by equipment. Tap any exercise to open its detail screen, which shows form guidance, common mistakes, and step-by-step instructions.
Settings
Access Settings from the gear icon in the Home tab header.
Your profile
Shows your current quiz answers and lets you edit any of them individually. Sections:
- Fitness level, equipment, availability (the 7 quiz questions)
- Focus areas (which body regions get priority)
- Name and display preferences
Changes apply immediately. You don't need to redo the full quiz — you can tap into any individual question and change just that answer.
Calendar preferences
Reopens the calendar setup wizard in re-run mode. Your existing selections are pre-populated — you can adjust which calendars are read, change your write target, or opt out of calendar writes entirely.
Use this after adding a new calendar to your device (e.g. after syncing Outlook) or if your write target calendar changes.
Daily workout reminders
DeskReset can send daily reminder notifications at times you choose. Settings:
- Master toggle — enable or disable all reminders in one tap.
- Reminder times — add up to three daily times. Tap the + button to add a time, or the time itself to edit it.
- Reminders repeat at the same time every day until you change or disable them.
- Android 12+ requires exact alarm permission. The settings screen shows a banner if permission is needed and links to Android settings to grant it.
Subscription
DeskReset includes a 7-day free trial with full access to all features. No charge until the trial ends — cancel before it's up and you won't be billed.
Plans
Managing your subscription
Subscriptions are handled entirely by Google Play. To cancel, switch plans, or view your billing status:
- 1Open the Google Play Store
- 2Tap your profile photo → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions
- 3Tap DeskReset to manage your plan
DeskReset never handles payment information directly. All billing goes through Google Play.
When the trial ends
If the trial expires without a subscription, the paywall screen appears the next time you open the app. Your reset history, profile, and settings are all preserved — subscribing at any point restores full access immediately.
